Now is about the time that news begins trickling out about which artists are touring over the summer. While many concert venues have set their schedules, fans might be happy to find that there is a wide array of live music experiences available this summer.

Who’s touring this summer? Country Music fans might happy to know that Carrie Underwood is currently on tour and will continue for a few more months, and Brad Paisley and Brooks & Dunn are also slated to tour soon. Other country music artists set to tour include Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw.

While she set herself as a country music singer, Taylor Swift successfully crossed country music lines into pop music in 2009 and her 2010 tour will stop at a number of venues this summer, including two nights at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and stops in Iowa, Ohio, Kansas, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York and other states and venues.

U2 will continue its highly successful 2009 tour into 2010. The Irish rock sensation will make a number of outdoor stops in the United States including stops at the Meadowlands Stadium n New Jersey, the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum in Oakland, Ca., Angels Stadium in Anaheim, Ca., and  Invesco Field in Denver.

Other headline tours this summer include the Dave Matthews Band, Green Day, John Mayer, Lady Gaga, Nickelback and Sting. Elton John and the Eagles will also headline some shows. John will also continue his highly successful Face 2 Face tour with Billy Joel this fall.

Finally, some of the grandfathers (literally) of rock and roll might be on tour this summer. Rumor has it that the Rolling Stones might head out on tour. The band hasn’t since it toured behind 2005’s “A Bigger Bang”.

Some of the collaborations that have long been rumored were confirmed by Aguilera. She said that the album will feature collaborations with Ladytron, Hill & Switch, Sia, Le Tigre, and Christopher “Tricky Steward”.  The album also features a ballad written by Linda Perry called “Lift Me Up”. AI Down to Final 10

To be admitted into the “American Idol” competition at all is enough for some singers, but most of the singers understand that being in the top 12 is one of the highest honors a contestant can receive. But the reality is for those who want to make a career in music, being in the top 10 is really where it’s at.

It’s the top 10 contestants that get to go on tour during the summer, and it’s during that tour that fans are made and record buyers are born. So the first two contestants to go on “American Idol” knew that they were missing out on being in that top 10. On Wednesday night page Miles was sent home, and she understood it was due partly to a lack of good song choices and partly due to some struggles with illness.

“I had a lot of health issues going on there … bad song choices”, Miles said. “But I still had a blast, and it was a great learning experience.”

Miles struggled during Tuesday’s No. 1 hits night, when she sang Phil Collins’ “Against All Odds”, a performance Randy Jackson called “terrible”.

When host Ryan Seacrest announced Wednesday night that Miles would be going home, the judges told her she didn’t have to sing a final song in order to try and stay on the show. Judge Simon Cowell told her that the judges had already decided she would not be allowed to stay on the show, so singing for her final chance to be saved by the judges would be pointless.

“It’s not working,” Cowell told Miles. “I don’t want to give you any false hope here. It’s the end.”

Miley Cyrus was the mentor during this week’s show and she returned to the results show to sing “When I Look at You.”

Next week, the theme will be R&B and soul music, and Usher will mentor the performers.

Miley Cyrus Leaving Music Behind… For Now

Those who are tired of hearing Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the U.S.A” and other such hits will be glad to know that Cyrus has announced she’s done with the music industry. For those also tired of her darling face, however, this is also bad news, because she’s planning to leave music so she can focus more on her movie career.

Cyrus told the panel on ABC’s “The View” Monday that she plans to back her upcoming June album release, but then plans to take time off to focus on other aspects of her career.

“I have a record coming out in June and that’s going to be the last thing I do in music for a while,” Cyrus told “The View” hosts. “I just want to do films ‘cause I like being someone else. My music is kind of like my diary. I’ll always do that … I just feel like the music industry isn’t as positive as I’d like it to be.”

Cyrus’ career took off after she became the star of the Disney series “Hannah Montana”. She recorded under the Montana moniker and recently as Cyrus, as she began to make the move to a less Montana-centered career. Her last full-length album was “Breakout” which was released in 2008. It sold over a million copies and brought Cyrus hits like “Fly on the Wall” and “7 Things”. The most recent release, “The Time of our Lives” resulted in the No. 1 hit “Party in the U.S.A”. If the next album is a success, Cyrus will be leaving music at her career peak. That album features her much-discussed cover of “Every Rose Has Its Thorn”.

Cyrus’ “Hannah Montana” was renewed for a fourth and final season which began filming on Jan. 18. That season is slated to begin airing in July.

Lady Gaga Sued for $30 million

Posted on 19 March, 2010 by amir

Lady Gaga is no longer a nobody. Because once you reach a certain level of fame, you know lawsuit is sure to follow.

Gaga’s being sued for $30 million by Rob Fusari, the co-writer of Gaga’s hit “Paparazzi”. Fusari is a producer and also ex-boyfriend of Lady gaga, and he says he discovered her in 2006 and that he created the moniker “Lady Gaga”.

Gaga’s two companies Teen Love Child and Mermaid Music are named in the suit, as Fusari is seeking a 20 percent cut from each company. He says he entered into a contract with Gaga in 2006 which would give him a part of her revenue and merchandising income. The New York Daily News reports that Fusari has had other hits as a producer with Will Smith’s “Wild Wild West” and Destiny’s Child’s “Bootylicious”. He says Gaga’s companies have shortchanged him on his royalty fees.

“It’s an age-old story in the music business,” said Robert Meloni, Fusari’s lawyer. “You become famous and you turn on the person who discovered you.”

According to the suit, Fusari recruited Gaga because he thought he would create an “all-girl version of the Strokes”. Instead, he was a little thrown by the Italian girl – Gaga’s real name is Stefani Germanotta — who arrived at his doorstep and was worried that he had made a big mistake. But the suit says Fusari believed in Gaga’s ability and that he helped craft her songwriting so that she could move beyond simple dance music.

He says they wrote three songs together that appeared on Gaga’s hit record “The Fame”  — “Paparazzi”, “Brown Eyes” and “Dirty Rich Beautiful”. He also said the bonus tracks “Disco Heaven”, “Again Again” and “Retro Dance Freak” were also written via their songwriting collaboration.

When Rolling Stone Magazine contacted Lady Gaga’s representatives for comment, they were told that Lady Gaga has no comment on the lawsuit.

Billboard Hot 100 Offers Few Surprises this Week

Rhianna’s single “Rude Boy” jumped from No. 4 to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 released Thursday.

“Rude Boy” marks Rhianna’s sixth Hot 100 No. 1 single. It marks her fifth as a lead artist. Some of her other number No.1 singles include “SOS”, “Take a Bow”, and “Disturbia”.

“Rude Boy” took out Taio Cruz’ “Break Your Heart”, which slipped to No. 3 on the Billboard chart. Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now” remains in the No. 2 spot. Lady Antebellum is the first country group to sit at the top of the Billboard chart since Billboard launched its Hot 100 in December of 1990. Taylor Swift, as a solo act and Lady Antebellum as a group are the only country acts to have sat at the top of the chart.

The Black Eyed Peas moved from No. 5 to No. 4 with “Imma Be”, which had been a No. 1 hit. Newcomer B.o.B’s “Nothin’ On You” moved quickly from No. 16 to No. 5 and also takes the Digital Gainer award, as it was up 77% in the digital category.

Train’s “Hey, Soul Sister”, which peaked at No. 6, had dropped to No. 7 on the chart last week but rebounded this week back to No.6 on the chart. Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok” moved from No. 8 to No. 6.

Jason Derulo’s “In My Head” slid from No. 8 to No. 10 this week. Drake’s “Over” entered at No. 35 this week, and it’s just one of three new titles that appear on the Hot 100. It’s been awarded the Hot 100 Hot Shot Debut for the week.

Even in Death, Jackson Brings in the Big Bucks

Michael Jackson’s estate has signed what is reportedly the biggest recording deal in the history of the music industry.

It’s been reported that Jackson’s estate has signed a contract with Sony Music worth more than $200 million. The deal reportedly involves the production of 10 various album projects over a seven-year period, including one album that will include previously unreleased material.

Jackson had been signed with Sony since the late 1970s and this deal would continue that long-term relationship. Although Jackson had a long-standing relationship with Sony, Jackson’s relationship with the music giant had become strained when Jackson borrowed millions of dollars from the music company. Some believe this deal will help Jackson’s estate repay some of the money Jackson himself borrowed.

According to sources close to Jackson’s estate, the contract will run through 2017 and could be worth up to $250 million.  The first album is set to be released in November and will include never-before released recordings from Jackson. Some of the future projects that might come out of the agreement include a DVD compilation of the videos, a re-release of Jackson’s “Off the Wall” which came out in 1979, and a video game.

According to people close to Jackson’s estate, before Jackson died in June of 2009, he had indicated a desire to re-issue “Off the Wall”.

“During his life, Michael’s contracts set the standard for the industry,” said John Branca, co-administrator of Jackson’s estate in a Tuesday press release. “By all objective criteria, this agreement with Sony Music demonstrates the lasting power of Michael’s music by exceeding all previous industry benchmarks.”

Some other benchmarks set in the music industry pale in comparison to this new contract. They include all rights deals that Live Nation Entertainment previously had with Jay Z for $150 million and Madonna for $120 million.

Those deals included royalties from merchandise, which Jackson’s does not include.

Many believe the money will be used primarily for settling Jackson’s debts, which are estimated to be around $400 million but the estate has already made money from “This is It”, which has already grossed $252 million worldwide, the most any concert film has ever grossed.

‘AI’ Down to a Final (Surprising) 12

Posted on 12 March, 2010 by amir

Fans of “American Idol” are griping via email and internet postings today about the singers who have made it to the final 12; there were several surprise eliminations on Thursday night.

Alex Lambert, Todrick Hall, Katelyn Epperly and Lilly Scott were all eliminated on Thursday, leaving judges shaking their heads in surprise and shock and the other “AI” contestants speechless. Scott, in particular, was highlighted as one of the contenders expected to go the distance.

Epperly, who had just begun to show her competitive flair with her song choices and performance chops, made a bit of a misstep in her performance of Carole King’s “I Feel the Earth Move,” and she was eliminated Thursday.

“It was definitely a great experience,” she said after her elimination, “and I’ve learned a ton. I’m not stopping now.”

The elimination that brought the most head shaking, however, was Scott’s. She was seen from the beginning as a contender to win it all, and her elimination shocked the judges and Scott herself.

“I thought that I was appealing to a lot of people,” Scott said Thursday. “It’s surprising; a lot of incredible talent is going home tonight. I don’t know what America wants to hear, I don’t. I just know that there’s an audience out there for me.”

The final 12 contestants include Crystal Bowersox, who Simon Cowell noted is the “one to beat” after her performance this week. But as this week has shown, voters can often overrule the judges’ preferences.

The other final contenders include: Lacey Brown, Andrew Garcia, Casey James, Didi Benami, Lee Dewyze, Siobhan Magnus, Tim Urban, Paige Miles, Aaron Kelly, Katie Stevens, and Michael Lynche.

The show now moves to the famous Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles until the May finale. Tuesday’s show will feature the music of the Rolling Stones.

According to Us: We Prefer Ke$ha’s Lyrics

Posted on 11 March, 2010 by amir
No comments

Two songs that sit at the top of the charts offer very different messages to young girls. While it might seem that Orianthi’s “According to You” is preferable to Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok”, I see it as just the opposite. Because while I don’t condone the promo for a party-girl lifestyle that Ke$ha spouts, I much prefer her girl-in-charge focus to Orianthi’s diatribe about what boys think of her.

Let’s look at Orianthi’s message a bit. She laments what an ex tells her about herself and delights in highlighting what the new man thinks. Here’s a sampling:

“According to you, I’m stupid, I’m useless

I can’t do anything right

According to you I’m difficult, hard to please

Forever changing my mind”

And it goes on:

“But according to him I’m beautiful, incredible

He can’t get me out of his head

According to him I’m funny, irresistible

Everything he ever wanted.”

So while it might seem at first that Orianthi is throwing her new man’s appreciation for her into her ex-boyfriend’s face, it actually sounds a bit too much like she’s defining herself by what these boys or men think of her. She never mentions herself, as in “according to me, I’m fabulous.”

Ke$ha’s “Tik Tok”, on other hand, can be a bit offensive to parents. After all, who wants their child to listen to a girl who claims to brush her “teeth with a bottle of Jack,” because when she leaves for the night she “ain’t comin’ back”?

But, let’s examine her message further. “Tik Tok” is a feminist anthem for party girls the world over. They are in charge of their fun, their evening and even the men who come along to crash their party.

“And now the dudes are lining up because they hear we got swagger

But we kick ‘em to the curb unless they look like Mick Jagger”

(Shouldn’t that be “IF they look like Mick Jagger? But I digress.)

Ke$ha’s party girl even argues that “the party don’t start ‘til I walk in.” How can you argue with that kind of confidence?

Although it’s not necessarily a positive thing for kids to hear someone make a positive case for partying all night and picking up random strangers, that’s easier to explain to children and teens than the message that you’re not good and right and worthy unless some boy says you are.
